When I was little my dad used to tell me stories about what the world was like before we had to leave the surface. I never really believed him, the idea of a giant ball of fire in the sky seemed so strange. I guess I’d grown so accustomed to the humming of the LED sunlamps that I never really considered that maybe there’s another way we would grow plants. I guess I should explain what happened and why I’ve never seen the sun before a day in life.. It all started about a decade ago (or so my father would tell me), no one really understood at first what was happening. But it became very clear what was happening almost instantly. The temperatures seemed to rise in an instant in many places, people in the most affected areas suffocated while others burned alive by the sheer heat. Some were even more unlucky, turning into ice within minutes. Some however, managed to be lucky enough to live in areas that seemed to be unaffected. Typically rural areas survived for a bit longer, as typically only cities and areas around cities were by the massive affected the temperature change in the beginning. When people realized that the nightmare scenario of a runaway greenhouse effect was happening, a project to go underground and sustain life somehow until another option is introduced was formed hastily. Thus, Project Runaway was introduced. Project Runaway was a sort of success, almost all survivors survived and vacated underground as the earth slowly over the course of a year pretty much became a clone of Venus. However, the project wasn’t as well planned as originally thought. Over the past 50 years food has become more and more scarce. Our food is rationed, and so is our energy and at this we rate we will be all out of supplies in the next 50 years. Something has to give. That’s why I have been restoring the space and stasis program that my father built before he died during launch. You see, living underground was never meant to be a permanent option. People don’t realize that food isn’t going to last forever! Humanity was never meant to live like this, hell, we already have such extreme rates of vitamin d deficiencies that peoples bones are typically brittle by the age of 30! Almost everyone has broken a bone and it typically takes a year to completely heal the bone even with our medication in place. It’s ridiculous. I don’t plan on saving humanity however, I only plan on saving myself. As selfish as that sounds, it’s all I can do. If I die in stasis or I drift through space forever, then so be it. I just want to continue my fathers research and make his life’s work a success. I have do it for all of the people who died in the original launch. I have no choice. Goodbye, and if there is a God, may he guide my soul to my destination. 3. 2. 1. Lift off. Huh? I’m… awake? Why is it… so dark.. Wh- dad, is that you? “Hello, son. I knew you’d finally find me. Welcome to the continuation of the human race.”
